Getting Started

New to London?

London's Cross Cultural Learner Centre (CCLC) served nearly 11,000 newcomers in 2024-2025 - reflecting just how quickly this city has grown as an immigration destination. The services are here, but housing competition is real.

Local Context

Why London Is Different

London is one of the few Ontario cities where newcomers can still find a reasonable cost of living, a growing job market, and a university-anchored community - all without the commuter orbit of Toronto.

In your favour

  • Western University and Fanshawe College anchor major employment in education, research, and healthcare
  • Lower housing costs than Toronto or Ottawa
  • London Health Sciences Centre is a major regional employer
  • Growing tech sector and strong manufacturing base

Where it gets harder

  • OHIP's 3-month wait applies - private insurance required from day one
  • Affordable housing is increasingly difficult - newcomers report wages not keeping pace with rents
  • Transit (LTC) covers the city but car ownership helps in many areas
  • Job market outside healthcare and tech can be competitive

Service Areas

What Newcomers in London Need Most

The six areas newcomers need to sort out first — with the right place to start for each.

Legal & Immigration Support

The London Cross Cultural Learner Centre (LCCLC) is the city's main newcomer hub — settlement services, language training, employment support, and legal referrals.

Healthcare & Medical

Apply for OHIP immediately — Ontario's 3-month waiting period starts on arrival. London Health Sciences Centre serves the region.

Housing & Rentals

London's rental market has tightened considerably. Know your rights before signing — Ontario's Landlord and Tenant Board resolves all tenancy disputes.

Home & Repair Trades

Verify trade credentials before hiring in London. Skilled Trades Ontario certifies and tracks all licensed tradespeople across the province.

Cultural & Community

LCCLC also runs London's multicultural community programs, connecting newcomers with cultural events, interpreter services, and community networks.

Employment & Career

London's healthcare, education, and insurance sectors are consistent employers. Employment Ontario connects newcomers to job listings, skills training, and credential recognition programs.

Things to Know

What Newcomers Learn the Hard Way

Apply for OHIP on day one and secure private interim insurance. London Health Sciences Centre is a major employer, but that doesn't mean you'll get a walk-in appointment quickly.

The Cross Cultural Learner Centre (CCLC) is mandated to help government-assisted refugees secure permanent housing within 21 days - and available to all newcomers. Contact them before you arrive.

Newcomers to Canada become business owners at a higher rate than non-immigrant Canadians. London has a growing entrepreneurship ecosystem through the London Economic Development Corporation.

Western University and Fanshawe College offer bridging and credential recognition programs. If your international qualifications need upgrading for the Canadian market, start the process early.
