Worst sushi and service experience I’ve had in Calgary. When we arrived, no server came to greet us for a few minutes, which was honestly fine. But when a server finally came over, she said “ちょっと待ってね” (wait a moment) in Japanese. The thing is, I hadn’t spoken Japanese at all. I’m not Japanese, but I am fluent, and the way she said it was very casual instead of using polite customer-service language (keigo). In Japan that would usually be considered rude. Throughout the visit she kept speaking in very casual Japanese, which made the whole interaction feel uncomfortable. I also noticed she spoke to other tables in a similarly casual way in English. The restaurant was only about half full, but the whole place felt disorganized. The chef making sushi kept telling the servers what to do, and it seemed like the servers were struggling to keep up with their tasks. Unfortunately the sushi itself was also disappointing, especially for the price. The ikura was the worst. It was extremely salty and had a strong unpleasant smell. We also weren’t served water unless we asked, and the food took quite a long time to come out after we ordered. Another thing I noticed was that the service seemed very different depending on where you were seated. The chef seemed very friendly with customers sitting at the bar seats, but if you were seated at a table the service was noticeably worse. When I asked for the bill, the server brought it but didn’t bring the payment machine. Instead she went into another room where people were doing a toast. My boyfriend and I waited several more minutes. Only after I put my jacket on like we were about to leave did they finally bring the machine. The whole time we were there we felt uncomfortable and had to remind the servers about our order. The food quality was disappointing as well. We paid about $80 for this meal, and when we left no one even said thank you to us, even though I heard them thanking other customers. As someone who has worked as a server before, I tried to be understanding, but this was honestly the worst restaurant experience I’ve had in Calgary. I don’t usually write reviews, but I hope the management seriously looks at how the service is being run.

Our first date night in months and we were not disappointed! Best experience overall! We learned about the history of the family and you could see the love and care put into the cuisine. Every customer was addressed by name and even small sentiments like “how is your daughter did she have her baby yet?”. This is exactly the place we will be returning to. More than reasonably priced for the amazing experience we enjoyed. With no reservation they still managed to fit us in with pleasure. I don’t write reviews but this was a night to remember! Thank you for hosting us

Love love the tonkatsu and rice! It was perfect in every aspect, juicy and moist with a crispy panko crust. I also enjoyed the gobo side dish which had a slight medicinal taste. I’m getting hungry just thinking about this dish. I highly recommend visiting Sushi Hiro for an authentic experience!

2024.11.02. Sadly This will be our last visit to Hiro. The quality of the sushi and sashimi are seriously deteriorating. The salmon was very fishy and gross. The Hirame and tuna are dry. The sashimi pieces are like the size of my thumb. We raised our concern to the restaurant and the waitress just came to say oh I heard you guys don't like our sashimi and sushi, I'm sorry about that. And as she says sorry to us, she walks away to attend others while we are talking to her. That was quite rude. 2024.02.14 Used to be our favorite sushi restaurant in calgary. Fresh sushi with reasonable price. Delicious skewers. Unpretentious. Occasionally offer some good selection of rare fish to find in calgary. However, quality has been hit or miss lately. The fish sometimes is quite fishy and not as fresh as it used to be. And the skewer sometime was too salty. Not sure it has anything to do with the chef on charge that day or just by luck. But usually, sushi quality tasted better when the older chef was serving us. 2023.09.15 Did take out from hiro. The skewer were quite salty, not as great as what we had at the restaurant last time. Some fish tasted not that fresh and rather fishy (e.g. the kanpachi, toro, and akami) . Abit disappointed. The same sushi was very good the last few time we had at the restaurant.

Fresh, tasty, authentic, and amazing. This place is our new go-to treat when we are craving authentic Japanese food. The items we ordered and I’ve detailed in my images were very good. We had a great time eating at this establishment and will definitely return again sooner than later. The prices are very reasonable for the amount of food you get and the quality of it too. There are many unreasonable complaints either comparing to those over-fancy NYC-wannabe places or the many overpriced and not so fresh AYCE (All You Can Eat) places throughout the city. We definitely ordered too much food, only because we wanted to try everything. Service was friendly and attentive, but not rushed; almost like being at a mom and pop shop in Japan. Atmosphere was nice and conversational, with no overly-loud pop music blaring in the background or bright lights everywhere. Their renovations are very timeless and classy. Their washrooms were brand new and very clean. Background: This place was recommended from another Japanese chef in Niagara Falls of our favourite Japanese restaurant in Ontario, who was a colleague of the owner. We waited a year to try them, as they were doing renovations and are glad we waited!
