I have been a loyal client of the Qualicum Beach Vet since 2019. I previously used another clinic in Parksville and spent upwards of $40,000 on my previous dog. In 2019 I had a new puppy Gizmo. He jumped off the bed and injured his leg. He was not able to put weight on his hind leg. When I phoned that veterinary clinic they said “we are too busy, take him to the emergency”. I phoned QB vet and was told to bring him right in. A vet examined my boy and he was able to immediately get x rays. Thankfully it was soft tissue damage and he healed up nicely. Needless to say I have never darken the other vet’s door again.
QB became our regular veterinary hospital. Later Gizmo got T boned by a dog twice his size. The resulting injury has required chiropractic treatments as needed every few months. Thankfully Dr Keller his chiropractic vet (from Victoria) started visiting QB Vet once a month in 2025. Dr Keller is wonderful and continues to give Gizmo chiropractic treatments as required.
In 2024 Gizmo either ate or got stung by a bee/wasp in his mouth. This resulted in anaphylaxis. While racing him to the Emergency vet he aspirated his vomit. He very nearly died and required extensive rounds of antibiotics for aspirated pneumonia. He was taking probiotics and it took time to recover. Unfortunately one year later his system crashed. He was having extreme acid reflux and belly cramps throughout the day but worse at night.
Unfortunately Western medications were providing little to no relief. After about 6 weeks I heard about Dr Nancy Louis (at QB Vet). Dr Nancy combines Western medicine, essential oils, Chinese herbs, bee products, acupuncture, laser and nutrition. It has taken time to stabilize his system. We had to slowly get him on a home cooked diet of kangaroo and vegetables. He was reacting poorly to other kinds of proteins. Testing showed that his biome was completely messed up and his gut had a significant lack of healthy bacteria. He had ozone treatments and several fecal transplants to introduce healthy bacteria into his intestinal tract. Each new supplement, vitamin, herb, etc had to be tried in tiny amounts or the reactions were extreme. Dr Nancy and Kirsten (her assistant, I must note she is also wonderful) have done a deep dive into the exact home cooked diet (exact grams per item) and added further vitamins and oils to ensure it is complete.
Dr Nancy is absolutely amazing. Each appointment is approximately 45 minutes. Dr Nancy works out of the house next door to the main clinic. It is a very calm and welcoming space that doesn’t smell like regular vet clinics. For nervous or fearful pets this is a fabulous space. Each follow up session is 45 mins and starts with a full review what has occurred since the last visit. My boy then gets his acupuncture/laser before being sent home with any new herbs, etc. My little Gizmo LOVES Dr Nancy. He only pulls on his leash when we go to the clinic, but I have to prepare to be dragged to the door. When we arrive at the clinic, he dances around and sings. I honestly believe my darling angel would not have survived without Dr Nancy's determination and skill.
The entire staff at QB Vet are really incredible. Prior to Dr Nancy we saw several other vets and we never had a negative experience. The technicians have been so kind and patient with Gizmo during so many procedures.
The owner of the clinic is Dr Ashley Bernauer. She also works with integrated techniques of Western medicine, Chinese herbs, acupuncture, nutrition, etc. While Dr Nancy was away we had a session with Dr Ashley (the owner of the clinic) and she was wonderful. Every time we have seen Dr Ashley she remembers us and asked how Gizmo is progressing. I would also highly recommend Dr Ashley (she was on maternity leave when I first started seeing Dr Nancy).
When so many clinics have been bought up by big conglomerates we are so fortunate to have QB Vet that puts the pet above the $. Thank you QB Vet a million times over.

Truly the best vets and vet staff I have ever encountered. They helped me rehabilitate and care for a stray cat who found his way into my life. A few years later when it came time for palliative care they were informative and thorough but never pushy. I always felt their care was very ethical and loving. I’ve had many pets and used many vets over the years and I’ve never had such a compassionate experience like I did with them. Thank you so much to the whole team here. Louis and I were so very lucky to find you ❤️

They’ve always been great with our pets. Ol’boy Flinty’s enjoying chew toys again—ever since he had his recent dental work done 🙂

Dr Nancy and all the staff at QBAH are amazing. Acupuncture has been a game changer for my Tethered cord border collie and his reactivity is almost gone! She has also started working on my senior GSD mix and she is seeing amazing results too. They are raw food advocates and i never feel pressured into anything. Highly recommend!

I’m very grateful that they could see my dog so quickly. Nora is a rescue and has behavioural issues we’re working through. She’s also very dog reactive and can be unpredictable sometimes. The whole team was very accommodating and understanding.
Thank you so much!
