When my Portuguese water dog, Jax, was 8 weeks old, I chose Anderson Veterinary Clinic for his medical care and took him there for the entirety of his life (14.5 yrs). As he aged, it felt important to stay with a vet that knew Jax’s history and remembered what our goals were, in hindsight this was a mistake. I chose this clinic originally because, at that time, it was a relaxed and personable atmosphere with an emphasis on his individual needs. I was able to form a relationship with ONE doctor and the care was practical and reasonable. Unfortunately, this slowly changed.
Over the years doctors retired, new ones joined and the clinic moved to their new location. The business was changing, as all businesses do, but at a cost. The now “high-end boutique atmosphere” questioned my trust in their priorities. The tone and culture shifted to a profit generating business model, and the care switched from being patient centered to an assembly line. It didn’t appear that the Vets were reading Jax’s chart or consulting with each other. Care turned into information overload with no context to make informed choices and questions were brushed off. We could never get a clear answer. It felt as if they were more concerned about their liability instead of what was right for Jax. Care should be about discussing benefits, risks and alternatives, instead, we were sold expensive tests that seemed to have little relevant outcome and watched Jax shake and suffer while undergoing invasive procedures. We couldn't decipher what was necessary. The fear of making the wrong decision haunted us, so all "recommended" tests were done but no cohesive plan was offered when the tests came back. We asked for patient counselling to form a plan but that wasn’t accommodated.
Instead of seeing one doctor regularly, Anderson Veterinary now operates like a walk-in clinic; there is no continuity of care. Doctors work 2-3 days a week or less and emergency appointments are treated as an inconvenience. I want to be clear the reception staff and vet technicians were outstanding. They were friendly, kind and very helpful. The problem we had with Jax's care centered on the Veterinarians. We needed for the gravity of our situation to be met with the appropriate action but the doctors were not on the same page. Dr. Waldern, with whom we had the biggest issue, prescribed a medication that had catastrophic effects for Jax. She didn’t read the test result revealing kidney trouble that should have altered his dosage. I understand that mistakes happen, but when we phoned franticly to tell her about the horrible effects we were seeing, we were dismissed; this ultimately cost Jax his life. We had to force our way into the clinic the next day, and a different doctor acknowledged the mistake and determined he was in Addisonian crisis. We were devasted and requested that Dr. Waldern was dismissed from our file. Our opportunity to extend Jax’s life was lost and we had to end his suffering shortly after. Our grief is compounded by the agonizing memories of Jax’s final months. This should not be a burden that families bear. We needed compassion and support. If the Vets had consulted each other and took our concerns seriously, the outcome could have been very different.
The veterinary clinic I chose when Jax was a puppy is not the one that exists today. A beautiful new clinic means nothing except that it must be paid for. It’s painful to relive this but it’s important to us that we spare another family this experience. We understand that other practices follow up with owners after a loss. We haven’t heard from Anderson and it is easy to understand why.

Dr. Petrisor has been my pet's vet for years. And there is a reason. She is kind, patient, thorough, honest, and of course, very caring. I wouldn't trust anyone else with my fur babies. Her team is pretty fantastic as well!

One week ago today on Feb 19th, our family said good bye to Honey, our beautiful dog of 13 years and a very loved member of our family. It was such a sad and emotional time for all of us. I cannot thank Dr. Casandra Van Engelen enough for helping us through this in such a sensitive and caring way. The nice room where we held Honey for her last breath, and the lack of pain she was in as she was put to sleep for the final time was apparent and it was appreciated. We have had great service from Anderson's through the last few years and we highly recommend them.
